OLD friendships were renewed and new friendships forged as more than 100 people joined to celebrate a milestone in Ilminster's history.

Dozens of former Ilminster Girls' Grammar School pupils, two former members of staff, and eight guests, marked the 70th anniversary of the Old Girls' Association, which was reformed after the war in 1945.

The day began with more than 70 members reminiscing in the old school building, where residents had invited them to see how the school rooms had been converted into family homes.

That was followed by a service of thanksgiving and celebration in the Minster church, led by the Reverend Val Hoare.

The school closed in 1971, and former pupils had much to catch up on over a lunch which was enjoyed by 115 people who are already looking forward to the 80th celebrations.
