EXCITED Greenfylde First School children and Swanmead Community School year five pupils in Ilminster hopped on a specially designed school bus last week.

The Life Education Wessex mobile classroom arrived in the town for fun sessions allowing children to learn more about how their bodies work and what they need to do to keep themselves healthy and safe.

The Rotary Club of Ilminster raised funds to enable children at both schools to participate in a four-day programme from funds raised at its annual golf day. Pupils learned through an interactive model of the human body, fibre optic lighting and a multimedia suite.

Films and puppets created by BAFTA award-nominated puppeteers from the BBC helped to capture their imagination and develop their critical thinking.

Helen Morrall, educator for Life Education Wessex, said: “Children at Greenfylde and Swanmead had the opportunity to take part in high impact, memorable activities which help them become better informed and more assertive about the health and well-being choices they make for the rest of their lives.

“The interactive nature of the sessions encourages every individual to become involved.”

Greenfylde head teacher Claire Oaten said: “Our children have one chance at life and it’s important that we offer them the education to keep on choosing and making the right choices.

“As our children are quite young it’s important that this is delivered in a way they can relate to, understanding about how important it is to care for themselves.

“Life Education achieves all this as well as giving children fun and enjoyable experiences learning alongside Harold the Giraffe and his friends.

“Having the mobile classroom created a real buzz to the lesson and enthused the children in their learning – and I’m sure this is likely to be one of the most remembered lessons this year. Our thanks go to Ilminster Rotary for again supporting the children in their learning and development.”
