EXCITED children at Greenfylde First School and year five pupils at Swanmead Community School hopped on a specially designed school bus last week.

The Life Education Wessex mobile classroom arrived in Ilminster for fun sessions allowing children to learn more about how their bodies work and what they need to do to keep themselves healthy and safe.

The Rotary Club of Ilminster raised funds to enable the children at both schools to participate in a four-day from funds raised at their annual golf day.

Pupils learned through an interactive model of the human body, fibre optic lighting and a multimedia suite. Films and puppets created by BAFTA award-nominated puppeteers from the BBC helped to capture their imagination and developed their critical thinking.

Helen Morrall, educator for Life Education Wessex, said: “Children at Greenfylde and Swanmead had the opportunity to take part in high impact, memorable activities that help them become better informed and more assertive about the health and wellbeing choices they make for the rest of their lives. The interactive nature of the sessions encourages every individual to become involved.”

Claire Oaten, head teacher at Greenfylde, said: “Our children have one chance at life and it is important that we offer them the education to keep on choosing and making the right choices.

“As our children are quite young, it is important that this is delivered in a way they can relate to, understanding about how important it is to care for themselves.

“Life Education achieves all of this as well as giving the children fun and enjoyable experiences learning alongside Harold the Giraffe and his friends.

“Having the mobile classroom created a real buzz to the lesson and enthused the children in their learning and I am sure this is likely to be one of the most remembered lessons this year and our thanks go to Ilminster Rotary for again supporting the children in their learning and development.”
