REPAIR work to The Beacon road in Ilminster is now well under way and Somerset County Council says it should be re-opened in time for Christmas.

The road was closed earlier this year after heavy rain caused it to move.

The repairs include a full reconstruction of the highway and footways and a new drainage system, and are estimated to take about seven weeks.

Scott Davies from the county council said: “Being conscious of opening the road as soon as possible, we’ve looked at reducing the build time as far as we possibly can, and we’re using a specialised piece of kit which reduces work on the new drainage system from four weeks to just four days.

“From our investigations we found that there was quite a shallow failure and we’re using new materials not used before on this road and building resilience.”

Cllr Harvey Siggs added: “It is great to hear that we have started work to rebuild the B3168 and we are confident that it will be open before Christmas due to new techniques and machinery that we are using.

“I understand that the road closure has been frustrating but thanks to an extensive investigation we were able to discover exactly what caused the road to slip and are now able to repair it and reinforce the strength of the road in a relatively short amount of time.
