ATTEMPTS to improve a link road from Ilminster to Honiton have taken another step forward.

Bosses at Somerset County Council and Devon County Council have looked at ways to improve that stretch of the A303.

In a survey they found that 80% of people think congestion is an issue and a resounding 97% wanted improvements made to the route.

Issues included:

  • A lack of overtaking opportunities
  • Congestion on the road itself and at its junctions
  • Concerns over safety
  • Slow journey times due to heavy goods vehicles

Cllr Nigel Pearson, who represents Chard North, said he is trying to keep the matter of improving the road in the spotlight to ensure that the work goes ahead.

He said: “I requested a progress update on the improvements, and this was reluctantly agreed to and will be taking place shortly.

“I followed this up by highlighting the problems at the Eagle Tavern junction at the full county council meeting, and an announcement on improvements to the A303 is expected in the autumn statement.”

Cllr David Hall, deputy leader of the county council, said the findings from the survey underline the serious shortcomings of the route.

He said: “This demonstrates that there’s real support for improvement, even by stages.

“We’re working hard with our partners on our case with the Government to improve the whole route as it’s a key strategic artery into the West Country.

“The economic benefits of upgrading this road are very significant for the entire region.

“We eagerly look forward to hearing the Government’s response.”
