Hazelwell Lodge shines at Care Focus Awards

UNSUNG heroes from a care home in Ilminster enjoyed their moment in the spotlight at a gala awards evening.

Around 300 guests dressed in dazzling dresses and dinner jackets for the sixth annual Care Focus Somerset awards in Taunton.

The awards recognise and celebrate outstanding individuals and organisations across the care sector, and finalists were selected from over 200 nominations from private, independent, voluntary and public, health and social care organisations.

Hazelwell Lodge, in Station Road, won the Dignity in Care award while staff member Claire Kingdon picked up the Outstanding Leader/Supervisor/Manager Award.

The 35-bed residential home specialises in dementia care.

A spokesman said: “All staff members care for individuals in a courteous and considerate manner, taking into account needs, wishes and preferences.

“We encourage and empower people to maintain their independence and make decisions regarding the care and support they receive.

“The home is managed in a relaxed manner with a close team of staff, which helps to promote a dignified, home-from-home environment.”

Claire has worked at the home for 16 years, progressing through the ranks to registered manager.

She said: “I have a passion for the service we provide and a satisfaction knowing it's delivered using a person-centred approach.”

Claire Waddon, Care Focus chief executive, added: “The stories of how the care, support and compassion offered by the finalists makes such a difference to other people's lives are heart-warming and humbling.”

Winners were presented with a trophy and floral bouquet by the host, former BBC Points West presenter Chris Vacher.

The ceremony also featured Oscars-style film clips of the finalists before the winner was announced.
