FOUR people have been hospitalised in the a major crash near Crewkerne which saw an ambulance flipped onto its side.

The crash, which involved the ambulance and a van, happened shortly before 6pm yesterday (August 31).

Police, fire engines and more ambulances were called to the scene, on A30 Yeovil Road.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said: "We were called just before 6pm to a collision involving one of our vehicles."

The ambulance was not in service at the time of the crash. One ambulance was following behind, and three officers and two crews were also called to assist.

There were four people involved, two ambulance crew and two members of staff.

The ambulance service are launching an investigation.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "We were called at 5.54pm to the A30 outside Stonehayes near Haselbury Plucknett.

"It was an RTC involving an ambulance and a small van, and the ambulance was on its side. We sent three appliances from Yeovil and one from Crewkerne.

"All occupants were free of vehicles. We made the scene safe and helped with traffic control. Highways and police were informed."

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset police said that road had to be closed after the ambulance overturned, and was reopened around 9.30pm.
