ONE woman has been rushed to hospital and five people were treated by paramedics after a series of car crashes in Crewkerne.

There have been reports of up to six crashes in and around the South Somerset village this afternoon.

In the first incident, three cars crashed into each other on North Street shortly before 3.30pm.

One woman in her 60s was rushed to Yeovil District Hospital with serious head and neck injuries.

It is understood that the injuries are not life threatening.

There are no other reported injuries in this incident.

In the second incident, five people were treated for injuries after a four car crash on A356, at the junction with A3066. It is believed that none of the injuries are serious.

It is understood that there have been up to five crashes along that stretch of road, as motorists face deteriorating weather conditions on the roads with ice and hail on the road.

A spokesman from Avon and Somerset Police confirmed they were dealing with a series of crashes in the area, but that none of the injuries suffered were thought to be life threatening.

Police officers have been forced to close the A3066 following the smashes, and have closed it from Misterton junction up to Cheddington Lane.

A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service confirmed it had been called to a series of crashes on A3066 and had taken a woman in her 60s to hospital with head and neck injuries.

It is not yet know when the road will be reopened, but motorists are advised to avoid the area.
