THE meeting on May 7 saw a long business meeting as resolutions had to be discussed. The results will go forward to the general meeting to be held in Liverpool. The resolutions were that deep sea trawling on the sea bed should be discontinued due to the damage to the eco system, and that prisoners suffering from mental disorders should be treated away from the prison environment. Both proposals were passed by a majority.
After refreshments, member Judy Barrett spoke on her visit to Bruges and Ypres. Bruges has much to admire, from a working canal to horses in the streets and four ancient archways.
It was the visit to Ypres which caused emotions to flow. The town was rebuilt after the First World War, and the road near the Menin Gate was closed at 8pm every evening for the playing of the Last Post and hymns. Thousands of names could be seen for remembrance and Commonwealth countries, also Canada had its own obelisk-shaped memorial.
