THE recent annual meeting of the Somerset Wildlife Trust Ilminster/Chard group began on a sombre note with Gill Bromley paying tribute to Michael Cooper, chair of the group, who had died recently.
Gill was reinstated as chair with the current committee re-elected en bloc together with Dr Charles Hill and Arthur Stoodley as new committee members.
Liz Byron representing Somerset Environmental Records Centre gave a most interesting and informative illustrated presentation on the work of SERC and explained its main roles as a record centre which offers a particularly effective graduate training scheme and is involved in special projects as a consultancy.

Data regarding species and habitats is collected, managed and supplied. Information is shared with specialist groups, individuals, Wildlife Trust and agencies such as Natural England. Objective data is provided for planning applications. Habitat extent and quality is monitored as well as the species within, particularly regarding the Biodiversity Action Plan and priority species. The speaker explained how individuals can access information via the SERC website and help to record useful information. The group expressed interest in getting more involved.
