RETIRED vet Malcolm Welshman was the speaker at last month's meeting of Chard, Ilminster & District U3A, when members were entertained by a series of amusing and hair-raising stories of his encounters with exotic animals.
Malcolm's life with animals started when he grew up in Africa, and he told of close confrontations with cockroaches, deadly snakes and equally deadly soldier ants.
His later experiences as a vet at London Zoo were no less enthralling, and an ever-present companion was an amazing parrot who seemed to run his whole household.

The speaker at the next monthly meeting, 2pm in Chard Guildhall on May 19, will be Ann Smith, curator and archivist at Sherborne Castle. This is sure to be a fascinating talk and visitors are most welcome to attend.
