Price hike for allotment holders

ALLOTMENT holders in Chard will see their rents go up by more by 50%.

Members of Chard Town Council voted in favour on Monday night of the yearly rental charge going up by £16 to £26.

Cllr Cathie Morrison said: “The rents have been very minimal over the years and £26 a year works out at about just 50p a week.”

The move to increase the rent fees has been made after the landowner of the allotments put up his fee to the council.

Cllr Martin Wale said: “I don’t see why the people of Chard should subsidise the allotment holders.”

I find the comment “I don’t see why the people of Chard should subsidise the allotment holders.” Inconsiderate and totally unjust, most of the people with allotments are the people of Chard. So this makes no sense at all. I pay for thing with my council and income tax that I do not use, so we all end up subsidizing others. With the attitude shown in this comment, there would be no charity of help for the people who need it. I have an allotment because of rising costs household bills, It is also good for the environment, keeps people active and joins all ages creating a very friendly community. For the allotment Fee we receive the use of the land and water all the hard work is down to the holder. It would have been considerate to contact the allotment holders 1st and we all could have worked out an agreement. What inflation rate is set at 50%? I feel that there may be an underlying reasons for this? I would appreciate feed back on this matter or information on who I can contact.
Regards.

Big Tories and Little Tories!

With the 50% hike on the Chard allotments rent brought about by the landowner upping the rent in this time of economic difficulties. It’s a case that “He’s all right Jack”, he’s got the land of milk and honey.
Typically the Tory councillor Martin Wale jumps to the defence of the landowner saying the people of Chard should not subsidise the allotment holders. He is the Big Tory looking after the rich and then we have the Little Tory in Henson Parks Cathie Morrison who in keeping with the national Con Dem coalition squeaks out the rents have been low for a long time so good for the landowner to push them up 50%.
With so many of the allotments holders retired and on fix income or young families trying to reduce the food bill what a sad excuse we have for our elected representatives looking after the wealthy and looking for any excuse to deflect the blame away from themselves.
Will the landowner put the rents up again next year; perhaps 25% as the council roll over again.
