THE Chard branch of the Royal British Legion has announced it has raised more than £8,500 from this year’s Poppy Appeal.
Branch chairman John Gudge has thanked everyone connected to a day of wartime memories – including a re-enactment of the “plotters” during the Battle of Britain – at the Guildhall on Remembrance Day which brought a “big gathering of Chard folk” for the silent tribute at 11am.
“We were honoured by the presence of serving soldiers from REME and local cadets which, I’m told, was organised by the town clerk.
“I would like to thank Lt Col Paul Richardson and 2/Lt Amelia Leadingham, our parade marshals, Jan Long of Lyme Regis Town Band who played the Last Post and Reveille, our town crier Stuart Cumming, members of Chard Rotary Club, RAFA, RNA and the police.”
A bingo evening organised by Andy and Jenny Kenton and other local councillors raised an extra £760 for the Poppy Appeal, while other events also boosted funds.
Mr Gudge added: “This was indeed a day to remember and I apologise if I have missed out on thanking anyone.”
