Time to support local shops...

TRADERS’ leader Graham Barnes believes Chard has a ‘successful future’ despite continuing gloomy news about the na-tional economy.

Mr Barnes, chairman of Chard Chamber of Commerce, said that although times are difficult for traders the town should remain upbeat.

“I’m sure that the professional approach that is always at the forefront of retailers in Chard will ensure a successful future for the town centre,” he said.

“But in order to get through the challenging year ahead, it is important that the community supports local traders so we can support them. Only teamwork across the community – be it shopkeepers, organisations, councils and individuals – will bring strength out of adversity.”

Mr Barnes said traders needed to provide a good shopping experience. “It is important that the experience of shopping in the town is to the satisfaction of customers,” he said.

“This means diversity of retail outlets with a friendly atmosphere throughout the town.”

It is likely to be a difficult January and February after the Christmas shopping frenzy and Mr Barnes hopes people will stay local to buy their festive gifts and goods.

The town will have free car parking days on December 13 and December 20, similar to Ilminster and Crewkerne, but Mr Barnes hopes the local authorities will look at more free parking initiatives in Chard to help traders and shoppers.

He added: “I understand there is a distinct possibility that funds might be available for the regeneration of the town centre.

“I would suggest that anybody with ideas should give them to their local councillors or the Chamber of Commerce.

“We have proved that we, as a town, can be recognised – just look at the great job we did in September when we successfully hosted the Tour of Britain bike race.

“We need to carry on in this way as a community and with a purpose.”
