FEARS that the clock tower on the Guildhall in Chard is about to topple over have been dismissed.
Eagle-eyed local photographer Martin Bennett submitted these two photos of the Guildhall showing the clock tower seemingly leaning to one side, while on closer examination it certainly looks as if the clock face is in need of some attention.
But town clerk John Furze, of Chard Town Council which operates the Guildhall, has tried to allay any unnecessary fears.
“This thing about the tower leaning comes up every year and it is right that it does appear to be leaning but it is leaning no more than it has always done,” he said.
“The tower has only just had its five-yearly inspection and the surveyor has not flagged up anything untoward.”
Mr Furze said the prospect of the tower toppling would be unfounded and there was no reason for any unnecessary alarm.
