CRIMINALS struck on Valentine's Day in three separate distraction burglaries in and around the Crewkerne area.
The incidents happened at Crewkerne, West Coker and Norton-sub-Hamdon during Thursday afternoon and now police are warning people to be on the alert against callers at the door.
The first was in Norton-sub-Hamdon just before 12.30pm, the second in Crewkerne at 1.30pm and the third was in West Coker at 2.30pm. All three involved two men and each householder was in their 80s.
Officers are continuing their investigations, but have praised the actions of the West Coker householder who locked herself in her home and denied the men entry.
Police are asking anyone living along the A303 corridor who is suspicious of any callers to call immediately on 0845 456 7000.
People are warned to keep their doors and windows secured, even if they are at home, and not to open the door without putting the chain on.
Neighbourhood PS Andy Lloyd said: "The thing to remember is if in doubt, keep them out.
"Don't let an unexpected caller into your home until you are satisfied they are who they claim to be. Genuine callers from the council or utilities will always offer you id and will be happy to wait while you check it.
"Sometimes these crooks will keep you talking at one door while an accomplice sneaks in at another, so keep your back door locked.
"The other important thing is not to keep large sums of money at home. We all have a responsibility to look after our vulnerable older relatives, neighbours and friends.
"This sort of crime is so distressing, you don't want it to happen to anyone you care about. Check with them now and make sure they know these despicable crooks are around."
