A CHARD woman who has raised more than £3,600 with an oriental expedition has not finished fundraising yet.

Stephanie Mitchell travelled to Beijing with three friends last month before trekking 55km along the Great Wall of China, inspired by her sister’s battle with cancer.

Now she is planning for another fundraising boost with a special Christmas dinner.

Steph said: “I have now completed the trek, which was very challenging.

“The steps of the Great Wall have to be seen to be believed and we returned home with jetlag, aching muscles, brilliant memories and a great sense of achievement.

“I set a target for £3,500 and have held cream teas, craft fairs, table top sales and raffles and have now exceeded my total, with more fundraising events planned, including a Christmas lunch for anyone who would like company on December 25.”

Mrs Mitchell’s sister, Heather, lost her battle with cancer around four years ago.

Stephanie added: “The trek in China was amazing.

“The five nights in between were spent in farmers’ villages, which were very basic, almost like going back in time, where the people were poor, hardworking and very friendly.

“The trek up the mountains to reach the wall in these areas was exhausting.

“The wall is crumbling, reduced to rubble in some parts. The watch towers are derelict, but the scenery is absolutely stunning.”

The Christmas lunch is being held from 12pm at Chard Baptist Church Hall.

There will be roast turkey as well as both vegetarian and gluten free options.

Transport can be organised, either by calling Donna on 07484 801112 or Steph on 07929 520958.

There is a minimum donation of £10 per person, with all money raised is going to the St Margaret’s Hospice.
