THE Poppy Appeal 2017 has been launched in Chard by a team of cadets, councillors and some friends from fantasy.

The poppy appeal is organised in Chard by Maryanne Adams, and was launched on Saturday at the Guildhall.

Maryanne took over organising the town’s poppy appeal in 2015 when she raised £12,489.40.

Last year she beat that, raising £14.726.57.

The launch event was introduced by Maryanne in 2016 and brought in £230. The weekend has seen Maryanne and her volunteer helpers collect more than £600.

In attendance on Saturday was the mayor of Chard Cllr Garry Shortland, other town councillors, representatives from the Chard branch of the Royal British Legion, volunteers from the town’s cubs and beavers groups, Chard Princess 2017, and four stormtroopers.

Each year, an army of volunteers distribute iconic paper poppies throughout the country, collecting donations in return to help support the work the Royal British Legion does for the Armed Forces community. Members of the public wear the poppy on their chest as a symbol of remembrance.
