FIRE crews from across three counties have combined forces to battle a huge fire at a three-storey home near Chard.

It took the team around 22 hours before they were finally able to confirm the fire had been put out.

Three fire engines were initially called to the scene, at Chaffcombe House, Cricket Lane, Chaffcombe, shortly after 2pm on Thursday afternoon.

On arrival, they requested a further six fire crews attend to help battle the blaze.

Crews confirmed the fire was located in the roof space of a three storey domestic property.

A host of fire engines were then sent from Axminster, Crewkerne, Charmouth, Lyme Regis, Beaminster and Yeovil.

Supporting fire engines were also been sent, including an incident command unit from Honiton, a water carrier from Yeovil, and aerial platform appliances from Taunton and Yeovil.

Shortly before 4pm, crews again requested further assistance.

Resources were sent from Yeovil, Colyton, Somerton, Castle Cary, Martock together additional supporting appliances.

This took the total number of pumping engines on the scene to 15.

The number of engines was reduced to six at 7pm and crews continued working until 10.40pm when the number of pumps was reduced to three.

Crews were at the scene overnight with a light portable pump.

Firefighters from Yeovil and Chard were still fighting the fire at 9.30am on Friday.

Shortly after noon, crews confirmed the fire was now extinguished.

Overall, the fire crews used four light portable pumps, ten main jets, to compressed air foam jets, six breathing apparatus, thermal image cameras, short and triple extension ladders, cutting away tools, small salvage and small water equipment.

There has been 80 per cent damage by fire and 90 per cent smoke damage.

The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental.
