ILMNSTER is set to be filled with cries of ‘Oyez’ and ‘Hear Ye’ as the annual crier competition returns this weekend.

Town Criers from far and wide will be competing for the Dillington Cup, which is awarded each year to the Town Crier judged to be overall best in volume, clarity, diction and expression.

Andrew Fox, the Ilminster crier and competition host, said: “The criers, many of them accompanied by their escorts, all colourfully garbed, ringing their bells will parade down East Street to the Market House.

“There they will compete with two cries, each of one hundred to one hundred and twenty five words. The first cry is always in praise of the crier’s home town after which there will be a break of about half an hour so that they can freshen up their throats.

“The second cry is on a theme. This year’s theme is Birds.”

The parade is set to start at 10.30am. The home cries are due to begin outside the Market House at 11am.
