A VIRAL message currently making the rounds on Facebook is incorrectly telling people what they are able to do in the event of finding a dog trapped in a hot car.

As the summer months approach, finding a dog in a hot car could become a more frequent occurrence, but what exactly can be done?

You definitely shouldn't believe everything you read, especially on Facebook, as breaking into a car, even to free a dog, could land you in trouble.

The message says: "The police are now saying if you see a dog locked in a car in hot weather take a picture of dog and car, if a person is with you get them to bring up bbc weather (your location) on their phone so you can screen shot the temp then brake window , this way you will not be charged with criminal damage and it gives the police and the RSPCA photo evidence to take owners to court can everyone please copy and paste this information to prevent this cruel act from happening."

Avon and Somerset Police has said this is NOT something officers would advise.

Instead, people should call the police and inform them, as breaking into a car yourself could end up in criminal damage charges.

A spokesman said: "No, this is not what we would advise, because we couldn't guarantee someone breaking into a car wouldn't face criminal damage charges.

"We would always advise people to call the police - on 101 or 999 in an emergency.

"Officers are able to gain access to cars to free an animal which is in danger."
