A MAN who allegedly went to Chard police station armed with a baseball bat and used it to smash the window of a police patrol car has been ordered to stand trial at Taunton Crown Court.

Somerset Magistrates were told that Iain Hayden had been suffering from mental health problems when he allegedly committed the offences in a bid to get arrested.

However the defendant was arrested and brought before the court at Yeovil.

Hayden, 31, of Halcombe Estate, was charged with being at Chard police station on March 5 while in possession of an offensive weapon, namely a baseball bat.

He was also charged with damaging a marked police vehicle of an unknown value on the same occasion.

The defendant did not enter any pleas to the allegations.

Magistrates adjourned the case until April 7 when Hayden must attend a pre-trial hearing at Taunton.

In the meantime he was given conditional bail with conditions that he must live and sleep at his home address and observe a daily curfew between 8pm and 8am.
