A PUBLIC consultation will be held over a proposed business hub at the Holyrood Lace Mill complex in Chard.

South Somerset District Council (SSDC) has unveiled the plans for the hub at the iconic building, with a planned launch pencilled in for next year.

Once completed, it is hoped the building will allow business owners from the town to meet to get advice and support, or for them to set up a temporary base if the firm is planning an expansion.

The business hub intends to provide a number of workspaces with a meeting room and a kitchen/breakout area, with up to 1GB of business Broadband connectivity.

Business support, networking and informative events are envisaged to help people start up and develop their businesses in Chard.

Now, views are being sought on the plans, from business owners and for those thinking of launching their own business.

Cllr Jo Roundell Greene, portfolio holder for economy at the district council, said: “The Lace Mill business centre will potentially support a variety of businesses in the local area and it’s important that we get the layout and content right to support the users.

“There are more and more small businesses being set up in South Somerset and this gives business owners the opportunity to not only settle in a familiar area to do their work, but also network and use other businesses that could potentially be neighbours in the same office space.”

There will be two business breakfasts on December 2 from 8am until 9.30am, and the next day from 11am to 12.30pm, for business owners to have their say.

Project chairman Cllr Carol Goodall added: “What we need to know is what local people, entrepreneurs and businesses want from the centre, telling us what you need will help to shape what we provide.”

South Somerset District and Chard Town Cllr Dave Bulmer said: "As mayor of Chard I have always supported positive initiatives, with the drop in sessions being a good way of reaching out to our community who have ambitions of starting a business, and to hear their views.

"I would wholeheartedly encourage people to come along to these sessions because it could be just what they are looking for. With networking there is potential opportunity for businesses to engage with other businesses which can enhance their long term plans."

Both drop-in events are on the fourth floor of the Holyrood Lace Mill to showcase the space, see the views and the views and give businesses an idea of what the business hub could be like.

On both Friday and Saturday access will be through the Library/SSDC entrance of the Holyrood Lace Mill.

On December 3, a member of staff will be on hand to guide visitors to the fourth floor business hub area.
