A PARALYMPIC bronze medalist brought the international games to a Chard school to encourage children to be more active.

Katrina Hart was part of Team GB's 4x100m relays team that took home bronze at the London 2012 games.

She visited Redstart Primary School in Redstart Road on the morning of October 7 and lead a sponsored fitness circuit.

Students and staff took part in a circuits session followed by an assembly and a chance to ask Katrina questions about her sporting life.

Nicholas Platt is a Redstart Primary School teacher and the sports co-ordinator.

He said: “We were very excited to be welcoming Katrina Hart to Redstart. She has cerebral palsy, completes in the T37 category and won bronze in the 4x100m relay in the 2012 games.

“The aim of the event was to inspire pupils to take up sport generally, but just as importantly to encourage them to discover and then pursue their passion in life. Much of the money that is raised will be used to buy sports equipment for the school, while also supporting GB athletes.”

Katrina Hart also won a gold medal for England at the 2010 Commonwealth Games competing in women's 100m T37.

The visit from the sporting star was part of the Sports for Schools programme, which organises visits to more than 350,000 pupils at 1,300 primary schools across the United Kingdom every year.

The project aims to help children gain a sense of achievement from being part of a scheme that has helped to raise nearly two million pounds for schools and PE equipment since it started eight years ago.

Sports for Schools work with a number of athletes including a number of inspirational paralympians.
