CHARD’S new monthly community cinema was declared a success at the inaugural event last week.

The group, called CineChard, was launched to try and bring members of the community together by watching films, as there is not a cinema in the South Somerset.

The event saw Eddie the Eagle screened at Guildhall in Fore Street on Friday, and the group will now meet on a monthly basis.

As well as the screening of the film, the Guildhall saw the bar opened, snacks for sale, and ice cream and a raffle draw at the interval.

Diana Goldmith, one of the event’s organisers, said: “There have been some great reviews. It was a fantastic evening.

“It went very well and we had about 50 people, which was quite good for the first night. We covered costs, which was the main thing.

“It is a community. We aren’t aiming to make any profits and any money we do make will go back into the community with things like events for the elderly who can’t get to the cinema evenings.”

Denise Watts and Andy McCarthy were among the Chard residents at the event.

Mrs Watts said: “Thank you to all those involved in making the inaugural cinema night at Chard Guildhall such a success hosted by CineChard.

“There was a real community spirit in the room and it was well attended. We loved the fact there was a raffle, drinks and snacks on sale and a bar too. I would encourage the town to get involved in this community event, you won’t be disappointed.

“Fantastic atmosphere too, kicked off with an introduction by Diane, who is one of the organisers, with a fine introduction by the deputy mayor Gary Shortland.

“A great example of community coming together.”

Joan Knight, also in attendance, said: “Thanks to a group of enthusiasts, another attempt is being made to show films on a monthly basis in the Guildhall.

“If the opening film Eddie the Eagle is anything to go by, CineChard will be a success. Tickets at £5 adults, enthusiastic audience, bar, snacks, ice cream and draw in the interval. I for one will be looking forward to the second Friday in the month.

“This is especially exciting for people like me who now find it difficult to get to cinemas in nearby towns. Good luck CineChard, I hope you get the support you deserve.”
