BMX riders, skateboarders, rollerbladers and scooter riders had the chance to put their skills to the test at Chard Sk8 Jam and Community Day.

The sun was shining and the rock music was blaring as hundreds of people descended on Henson Park on Saturday for the event.

There were plenty of tricks on show as local half pipe fanatics showcased their skills, and there were also stalls, a BBQ, a bouncy slide, and a booth from Avon and Somerset Police Cadets.

Ryan Doeller, form the charity Street Space Youth Project, who organised the event, said: “It is a really chilled out, relaxed atmosphere, we have parents and children of all ages, with all the age groups mixing and talking to each other, which is what it is all about.

“It’s good news that the sun is out, because that helps bring the people in.

“We are expecting about 300 people throughout the day.”

“BMX and scooters are the biggest things in the town at the moment, but I’m too afraid to do it these days.

Street Space Youth Project had ten volunteers helping to organise the event on the day, and there were different competitions run for BMXs, scooters, skateboards and rollerblades, with participants paying £2 to enter competitions and win prizes.

Mr Doeller added: “We are also doing a high jump competition, and last year the highest jump was 44 inches, so we are looking to beat that this year.

“I think it’s very important for the local community that we put on these kind of events, because we do it with them, for them.

“This is the sixth year that we have run the event, and we have a partnership with the council, which means we can use their land.

“We have six different businesses that have given us prizes, including a brand new bike, which is the top prize in the raffle.

“All the profits from the day go to expanding the skate park here in Chard.”
