A FACTORY fire near Chard called crews into action yesterday morning.

Four fire engines from Chard were called to the scene in Cricket St Thomas shortly after 9am after reports of flames and smoke within some sawdust.

The Devon and Somerset Rescue Service said the fire was next to a Manor Factories building.

The building sustained smoke damage, and three bags of sawdust were destroyed in the fire.

Fire crews confirmed on arrival that the fire was possibly affecting the side of the building and requested a third fire engine, which was sent from Crewkerne.

The building, which was made dominantly of steel, measured 40m by 40m.

Crews used a hose reel jet, two sets of breathing apparatus, and one foam branch to extinguish the fire within the saw dust and side of building.

A positive pressure fan was then used to clear the building of smoke.

Duty of care was left with a staff member.
