A PENSIONER has appeared in court charged with a string of historic offences of indecent assaults on teenage girls at Chard.

David Lambert, 68, of Jays Field, Neath, West Glamorgan, appeared in the dock before Somerset Magistrates at Yeovil.

He was charged with four counts of indecently assaulting a girl under the age of 16 years at Chard between July 1, 1999, and August 31, 1999. He was further alleged to have indecently assaulted a woman aged over 16 on four separate occasions between the same two dates at Chard and pleaded not guilty to all eight offences.

Prosecutor Christine Hart said the defendant allegedly carried out “unlawful touching” on the two victims and said the case was so serious it should be sent to Taunton Crown Court to be dealt with.

The magistrates agreed and told Lambert he must stand trial before the crown court.

They adjourned the case until June 6 when Lambert he must appear before a preliminary hearing at Taunton and for a trial date to be fixed.

In the meantime Lambert was released on unconditional bail.
