South Somerset District Council's Community Heritage Access Centre (CHAC) recently received a donation of an item and they need your help to identify its use.

The item is known as a glove iron and it has always been thought by staff and volunteers at the centre that they were used to iron the gloves to give them a good shape to be sold. However, new research has come to light saying that they were called 'Tuckers' and were used to heat the leather to enable the fourchettes and quirks to be tucked in, finishing off the glove.

Did you ever work in a glove factory and use one of the items shown in the photograph? If so, staff at CHAC would like to hear from you.

Councillor Nick Weeks, Portfolio Holder for Heritage at South Somerset District Council said, "Research into this item has forced the staff at CHAC to think again about its possible use in the world of gloving. The staff would like to ensure that they are identifying the use of items correctly so history can be preserved. If you know of the items use, please get in contact with staff at CHAC".

If you can confirm the use of the item, please contact Clare Robinson at CHAC on 01935 462886 or by email at clare.robinson@southsomerset.gov.uk.
