STUDENTS at Holyrood Academy in Chard have been given the opportunity to learn and experience music from the other side of the world – the Indonesian island of Java.

Students were able to get involved with Javanese Gamelan Workshops and have a go at a new style of music during their regular lessons when they learnt about the traditions of Javanese Gamelan music and got the chance to create and perform an original composition of their own.

Nick Brace and staff from Actiontrack Performance Arts Company brought a huge selection of instruments to create a mallet orchestra at Holyrood and students enjoyed learning about the fundamentals of Gamelan music and participating in the creation of their own tunes.

Holyrood’s head of music, Andrew Gilham, said: “This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to get hands on experience with an entirely different set of instruments.

“As well as being highly educational, the sessions allowed everyone to achieve an impressive standard of music making in an incredibly short time frame, giving students a great sense of achievement.”
