FIVE ladies from Chard are pushing themselves to the limit in a series of fundraisers so they can enter next year’s London Marathon.

Liz Wallis, Isabel Wallis, Lisa Jane Mather, Jo Boyland and Donna Wellman are aiming to raise £9,000 in total to help Spinal Research after the death of their friend, Martin Bridgeman.

The ladies started raising money after Martin suffered a cycling accident which left him paralysed.

Liz then applied to Spinal Research to take part in the London Marathon and was accepted.

Then, shortly before their first fundraiser, Martin sadly passed away.

Inspired by Martin’s memory, Jo said: “The work that Spinal Research are doing is so important, we never know when one of us may need treatment for a spinal cord injury.

“You often hear of people whose lives have changed overnight after having an accident, we have seen this first hand and want to help make a difference.”

Liz added: “Martin was a real inspiration as he had got really fit, lost lots of weight and was very passionate about cycling.”

The women have so far raised £1978 and have done a number of events including a Bradley Wiggins spin, coffee mornings, a bingo night and a 12 mile military tab.

Jo added: “We would like to thank everyone who have supported our events so far and a big thank you to 1610 Chard for providing the venue and bikes for the spinning events and to Crowshute House for organising the bingo evening.”

Their next fundraiser, a 40 mile cycle ride, is taking place on Sunday, September 27.

The event is starting at 10am from Tapstone Road in Chard. The price is £10 per bike and refreshments will be made available at the midway point.

A 3 hour endurance spin, 15 mile military tab and Christmas raffle are all planned over the next few months.
