THE nervous wait for GCSE students from Chard and Ilminster ended last week as they gathered to discover whether they had made the grade.

Year 11 students at Wadham School in Crewkerne have produced some great GCSE results with 66 per cent achieving grades A*-C in five or more subjects.

Every student completing Key Stage 4 has at least one GCSE and many exceeded expectation. Many students performed exceptionally well including the 21 students who achieved A or A* in five or more subjects.

The following 14 students achieved eight As or A*s: Catherine Baron, Amy Gardiner, Andrea Gibbs, Alfie Harvey, Emily Hill, Sam Hoskyns, Sarah Keylock, Lily Limmer, Reuben Morris, Ella Reed, Isobel Rowe, Emily Singleton, Will Skinner and Hannah Wood.

Eight students gained 10 or more A* and A grades, while Alfie Harvey and Sam Hoskyns gained 12, and Amy Gardiner, Sarah Keylock and Hannah Wood achieved 11.

Headteacher David Derbyshire said: “These results reflect the hard work and determination on the part of the students and the skill of staff in providing individual support and guidance.

“Our students deserve their success and we are very proud of them and their achievements. We are now looking forward to working with many of them as they move in to the Sixth Form at Wadham.

“We wish all of them well for the future. The school will continue to focus on supporting all our students to achieve their very best.”

Holyrood Academy students in Chard have been celebrating “fantastic results” in their GCSEs.

Over 60 per cent of students achieved the Government’s gold standard of A*-C in English and Maths. 68 per cent of all grades were awarded at A*-C with 16 per cent being at the highest grades, A* and A.

All these figures are a “significant improvement on the previous year”.

Principal Martin Brook said: “Days like today are what it is all about; staff and students celebrating their successes.

“These students have been an absolute credit to the Academy as they have moved up through the years, so I am delighted today to be celebrating their achievements.

“They deserve every bit of credit going but I would also like to praise and thank the staff for what has been a great team effort.

“We have made a number of changes this year, which have been quite challenging, but they have worked so hard to make things work for the students and these results clearly show that Holyrood is making huge strides toward our goal of becoming a centre of educational excellence.

“I am now confident that because of these results we will have a record number of students moving up in to our sixth form this year, where I have no doubt they will continue to excel. Well done everyone.”

Notable successes included: Lauren Winch with nine A* and one As, Emma Harris with eight A* and three As, Niamh Rodgers with seven A* and five As James Woodcroft with seven A* and four As, Leilah Salter with seven A* and two As, Lorena Hall with four A* and seven As, and Beth Cosgrove with a fantastic ten A*s.
