MEMBERS of the 2nd Chard Girls’ Brigade have been do their bit for the wider community by raising money for charity and getting involved with recycling.

The girls carried out the fundraising as part of a badge-earning project and to raise funds for relief work in Vanuatu The girls have recently been looking at the topic of stewardship and related this to “stewarding the planet”.

As part of this badge they have been looking at ways of looking after the environment and focused on reusing and recycling to cut waste.

The guides made items to sell using recycled materials, including bracelets made from magazines and empty drinks bottles.

They also decided to hold a bring and buy sale and invite parents and friends to come along and pick up some of their hand made items.

The girls in the rest of the company also chipped in to help by lending a hand selling items and there was even a cake stall with lovely cakes to buy which the older girls had made.

All proceeds from the evening went to help the islands of Vanuatu, which are situated in the South Pacific Ocean.

The low-lying islands were was hit hard by Cyclone Pam earlier this year, causing widespread destruction.

There are eight Girls’ Brigade Companies on the islands and many of the girls and officers lost their homes and are still trying to rebuild their lives.

Captain of the 2nd Chard Girls’ Brigade, Mandy Slingsby, said: “A brilliant total of £130 was raised – well done everyone.”
