TATWORTH Primary School is celebrating after inspectors from Ofsted gave it a “good” rating in all categories following an inspection.

The inspectors said at the previous inspection that the quality of teaching “requires improvement”

and has now improved the school rating to “good”.Headteacher, Stephen Clarke, has been praised for the way he has provided clear leadership for the school during a time when there has been a high staff turnover, providing training and targeted support and guidance to a new team of teachers.

The school’s chairman of governors, Val Joslin, said: “We are delighted at this rating and the governing body will continue to strive for improvement to become an ‘outstanding’ school.

“The inspectors recognised that this is a small school serving the local community and that there has been a real change since Stephen Clarke has been head.”

Mr Clarke said: “It’s very pleasing that the inspectors praised the behaviour of pupils and recognised how they had responded to the higher expectations and improved quality of the appearance of their work following a recent focus we had on handwriting and presentation of school work.

“It is fantastic when the staff, governors, pupils and parents involved in a school all work together and that is what we have here now at Tatworth Primary.”

The school was rated good for leadership and management, behaviour and safety of pupils, quality of teaching, achievement of pupils and for its Early Years provision.

Inspectors sat in on 12 lessons, a whole-school assembly and a classroom-based assembly. They also met pupils, governors and staff and heard from 72 parents through an online questionnaire.

The full report of the inspection – carried out by David Hogg and Frances Harding - has been published on the Ofsted website.

The inspectors have recommended that the school can improve even further with better teaching and marking of work.
