A COMMUNITY of skaters, friends and family members in Chard have been left in shock after a young father lost his life in a car crash.

The victim of a fatal crash near Ilminster on Saturday evening has been named locally as Gary Powell.

Tributes have been flooding in online for the “very special” 27-year-old who recently married and only last month bec-ame a father.

Police say a second driver involved in the collision has been left with possible lifechanging injuries.

Local skaters and riders all gathered in Chard on Sunday for a special ride in memory of the former Holyrood Academy pupil.

Local BMX rider Liam Beer took to Facebook to say: “Thanks to everyone who got together for a very special person who will remain in our thoughts forever.

“We will all cherish the great memories we shared with him. Rest in peace Gary – a true legend to everyone who was lucky enough to know him.”

Mr Powell has been described in another online tribute as “such an awesome, funny, caring and genuinely top bloke.”

Nicola Powell added: “Gary was a loving son, brother, nephew, cousin, uncle and friend.

“He grew up to be an even better husband and father, we are all heartbroken at losing him so suddenly and send all our love to his family.”

The fatal crash is the second on the same stretch of road since the turn of the year, and the police are hoping to speak to anyone who may have information about the crash, which took place at Whitelackington at about 9.40pm on an unclassified road about 200m west of Back Lane.

An Avon and Somerset police spokesman said: “A Ford Focus travelling eastwards was in collision with a Ford Mondeo travelling in the opposite direction.

“Both male drivers were trapped in their vehicles.

“Despite receiving treatment, the 27-yearold driver of the Focus was pronounced dead at the scene shortly afterwards.

“The driver of the Mondeo was taken to hospital with possible life-changing injuries.

“Investigators are keen to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time who may have information to help their enquiries.
