THE Holyrood Academy Choir has sung their way to success after winning two categories at the Grand Pier Christmas Carol competition in Weston-super-Mare.

After their success at the first round of heats in November, the 60-strong student choir was up against eight other schools in the Grand Final on December 1.

With their renditions of ‘So Many Stars’ by Lin Marsh and Mr Trevor Lloyd Jones’ ‘Here It Is’, the Holyrood Choir topped the ‘Secondary School’ category.

Then the big news of the night was when Holyrood was also announced as the overall winner of the whole competition.

They were given £250.00 for the Academy’s Music Department and the special invitation to take part in a Choir Showcase at the County Carol Service at Wells Cathedral on Monday December 8.

Mr Andrew Gilham, head of Holyrood Music, said: “The standard of the competition was very high, so to make it to the Grand Final was an achievement in itself.

"To win outright is a magnificent achievement and a testament to the talent and dedication of our choir members as well as the skill and enthusiasm of Choirmaster Trevor Lloyd Jones."

Laura Bloomfield, event coordinator at The Grand Pier congratulated the choir on their performances.

She added: “Holyrood Academy Choir was the well-deserved Winner of the Grand Pier Christmas Carol Competition this year.

"The harmonies, projection and tuneful singing contributed to a superb performance from a very talented choir.”

Mr Martin Brook, Principal of Holyrood Academy attended the final.

He said: “The evening was undoubtedly one of the highlights of my relatively short time as the Principal of Holyrood.

"The students sang their hearts out and the quality of their performance was recognised by everyone present including the judges.

"I am particularly pleased that this prize may go some way to rewarding our inspirational Music teachers, Mr Lloyd Jones and Mr Gilham who work tirelessly to produce music of the very highest quality with our students.

"They clearly love what they do and it shows!’
