A CHARD businessman is lighting up the sky this November to mark a new era at Cricket St Thomas Golf Club - formerly known as Windwhistle Golf Club.

Steve Hill, a long-serving member at Windwhistle Golf Club, recently purchased the business and thought a family fireworks display on November 7 would be the ideal way to mark the recent takeover, as well as a late celebration for Guy Fawkes Night on November 5.

Mr Hill, who is already a major employer with over 90 staff at Metaltech Precision Limited based at Chard Junction, made the decision to purchase after watching the club struggle in recent years.

He said: "I have been a member at Windwhistle and having seen the return to agricultural use of many local golf courses I was determined for it to continue and make it the premier golfing destination in the area.

“I would like to thank the members for the warm welcome and support which has greeted us and also my staff at Metaltech for making it all possible.”

Changes have already begun with a rebranding to Cricket St Thomas Golf Club, which signifies a fresh start for the club.

All the current members of staff have been retained plus the appointment of PGA professional Paul Deeprose as the new general manager.

The display starts at 6.30pm and members and non members are all welcome.

Tickets are available at the club or on the night. For more information call 01460-30231.
