POLICE are taking a firm stand against burglars this Christmas with the launch of the first Covert Capture House' in the South West.
The initiative uses a range of technical devices and equipment placed in a secret property so if someone breaks into the property live images are beamed to the control room at police headquarters.
Asst Ch Con Jackie Roberts said: "This is all about reducing burglary offences by putting the fear of crime back into the criminals.
"The risk of getting caught is one of the greatest deterrents for offenders and my message to any would be burglar is simple - if you take a chance you may get a little more than you bargained for."
Police advice on avoiding becoming a victim of crime this Christmas: * Always lock your doors and windows; keep external doors secure even when you are at home.
* Don't leave Christmas presents in view. Hide them in a secure place, not in a shed or garage, which may well be easier to access.
* When you go out, try to remember to leave some lights on to give the impression that someone is at home. However, never leave the Christmas tree lights on if unattended.
* When out Christmas shopping, try to park in well-lit, open areas and do not leave items on display on the seats. Always put any purchases in the boot, hidden away from prying eyes. Try not to return to the car with some of your shopping, and then leave it again, as thieves may be waiting for such an opportunity to find out what is being put into your car.
* Over the Christmas period please be aware of any neighbours who may live on their own and who may be vulnerable, and report any concerns for their welfare to the police.
* Discreetly dispose of empty boxes - boxes sitting outside waiting to be collected by refuse collectors can advertise the goodies inside your house.
* Remember to post-code and log on www.immobolise.com any new electrical items and bicycles, and keep a record of serial numbers or frame numbers in a safe place.
