PUPILS from Winsham Primary School have received free packets of pumpkin seeds thanks to a Somerset garden centre.

The school received the seeds from Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre in Monkton Heathfield near Taunton as part of its pumpkin growing competition.

Headteacher Sarah Stringer said: “We are extremely grateful to the garden centre for donating the seeds to our school. We have recently revamped our field and it was declared officially open by David Laws MP.

“We have a brand new outdoor shelter, compost toilets, pond and vegetable garden and we are looking forward to planting the seeds and seeing them grow.

“We will be entering the garden centre’s competition and hope we can grow Somerset’s biggest pumpkin.

“We aim to use our field as much as possible for outdoor learning and are excited about growing our own vegetables and salad. We now also run a weekly outdoor club.”

Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre runs the pumpkin growing competition annually and always has lots of entries.

The schools that received the seeds will be invited to take their pumpkins back to the garden centre between October 18-20 for judging.
