Students win Barbara Agutter Award

STUDENTS from Holyrood Academy in Chard have won the Barbara Agutter Award for their design of an ecumenical church for the town.

The aim of the religious studies community cohesion project was for all students in year eight to investigate the diverse Christian groups in Chard and to learn about their similarities and differences.

They were asked to consider how an ecumenical design could improve the life of a Christian and how it could benefit the Christian community in modern times.

All of the students visited Chard Methodist Church, St Mary’s Church and Chard Baptist Church and learned about other denominations in their lessons.

They then designed an ecumenical church based on their investigations.

Church leaders and helpers then voted the designs of Katherine Locke and Grace Bale as the best to represent Holyrood in the county-wide Babara Agutter Award which they went on to win.

The award is held each year for years one to eight in all Somerset schools and is to celebrate good practice in religious studies by a class or year group in which judges are looking for innovation, inspiration, imagination, creativity and originality.

Certificates were presented by Mike Tedstone, the religious studies adviser for Bath and Wales.
