Children living in poverty

A REPORT has shown that nearly a quarter of children in a part of Chard are living in poverty.

Statistics revealed by the Campaign to End Child Poverty show that 23 per cent of children in the Chard Holyrood district council ward were deemed to be impoverished last year – the highest percentage figure across South Somerset.

Figures for other areas of Chard were as follows: Avishayes 17 per cent; Combe 16 per cent; Jocelyn 16 per cent; Crimchard 13 per cent.

The figure for child poverty in Ilminster matched that of South Somerset as a whole – 12 per cent. That rose to 13 per cent in Crewkerne.

The South Somerset district had the lowest percentage of any district across the county. Other districts within the county saw West Somerset with 17 per cent, 16 per cent in Sedgemoor, and 13 per cent in Taunton Deane and Mendip.

With fuel prices going through the roof and house energy costs going up and up, together with the general rise in food costs and with real wages being cut by inflection, things can only get worse.

There is now a real fear taking over in the work place with people so desperate to hold on to what ever job they have, just to pay the bills and attempt to have food on the table.

Gone are the bright and hopeful days of the pre-bankers financial crash.

Soup kitchen Britain hear we come.

Not too sure what todays definition of poverty is,-no flat screen tv,no games console' can't afford a McDonalds?. Can't say I've seen many children around Chard or Ilminster with no shoes and ragged clothes etc. Real poverty is what we see in TV documentaries of the early part of the 20th century before the welfare state came into being. Time and again we see on TV people saying how hard up they are whist puffing on a cigarette (£6+ a packet) with the kids playing games on the TV, and quite often a dog in the vicinity. Yes, times are difficult for many, but poverty, no.

Well said Orchardman - money for alcohol and smokes is more important for some than food and clothes for their children. (See, I didn't even mention drugs!)

Hah, lets not worry about child poverty as more importantly corporation tax is down to 23% this year.
With low business taxes and an abundant of cheep labour capitalism is on a winner.
I am sure capitalism will find a profitable use for poor children.
