PLANS for an extension at Redstart Primary School in Chard have been given a big thumbs-up by local councillors.

The school has applied to South Somerset District Council for permission for two single-storey extensions, along with a small extension to its car park and a pavilion.

The plans include an extension to the school hall and a six-class extension to accommodate pupils currently taught in temporary classrooms.

Head teacher Suzanne Flack has said the small extension to the car park could help ease parking congestion around the school – a cause for concern in recent times.

Members of Chard Town Council’s planning and highways committee welcomed the proposals when they met on Monday night at the Guildhall.

Committee chairman Cllr Tony Prior said: “I haven’t had one objection from anyone despite all the recent problems there have been about car parking around the school over the years.

“I think people must be satisfied with the proposals.”

Cllr Prior added: “I think children should be educated in proper classrooms. The temporary buildings are too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer.”

Cllr Martin Wale said: “I’ve been to Redstart on many occasions and I think the temporary buildings let down the splendid efforts that are going on in the rest of the school.”
