A GROUP of young people from Ilminster’s Glade Centre are putting Somerset’s multicultural history in the spotlight with a new project.

The Global Collective youth group have begun work on a project exploring the history of people who have migrated to the area from other countries.

The project, called People on the Move, aims to document the experiences of people from black and ethnic minority backgrounds to help young people embrace different cultures.

It has been funded by a £24,300 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund’s Young Roots programme and supported by the Somerset Racial Equality Council.

The Global Collective group were coached by Somerset Heritage Services on how to conduct interviews for archive at Somerset’s record office.

Somerset Film also provided hands-on training on how to plan, shoot and edit a short film.

Project co-ordinator Jessica Witchell said: “We are delighted that the Global Collective have the opportunity to learn about immigration issues and record the voices of people who have moved into Somerset from another country.

“The young people involved will gain valuable skills and make a lasting contribution to Somerset’s cultural heritage.”

Global Collective is looking for more young people to join the project, as well as people from black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds who are willing to be interviewed.
