Flower show celebrations mark hall opening

THE annual Horton Flower and Vegetable Show was part of the celebrations of the opening of the new village hall.

There were plenty of visitors to the show, held in the adjoining pavilion, and they were greeted by a splendid show of vegetables, flowers, crafts and cookery.

There was a record entry of 570 exhibits with nearly 90 people prepared to put their entries on display.

Show chairman Paul Pickering said: “The people of Horton and the surrounding area came up trumps again by raising cash to finance this superb hall, and by now putting on a flower show worthy of the splendour of the building.”

The auction at the end of the show, run by Don Hector, raised a record £234, and this was a small part of the cash raised by a whole variety of activities which went on until late in the evening.

Special award winners were: Cecil Loud Shield for runner-up in the young people’s sections – Holly Rogers and Rosie Tip-ping; Withers Challenge Cup for most points in youth people’s section – Rosie Tipping and Holly Rogers; William Chislett Memorial Vase for best sweet peas – Barbara Black-burn; chairman’s prize for vegetables to go with a meal class – Paul Pickering; Crossley Cup for hanging basket – Barbara Blackburn; Merryfield Cup for four varieties of cut flowers – Mrs L.
