JUNIOR athletes took to the fields of Chard Rugby Football Club on Friday for an Olympic competition involving youngsters from Somerset, Devon and Dorset.

Nearly 50 children aged from four to 15 took part in the sports day organised by the Home Education Centre, which provides group activities for home-educated children.

The competition saw children representing individual countries vying for medals, as well as working together as part of a continental team.

The day was a culmination of a year of sports training from Joel Gostling of Teamtheme in Lyme Regis, which was made possible by financial backing from the Healthy Living Pool Fund.

As well as more traditional sporting challenges such as running and rounders, there were three-legged egg and spoon races and an obstacle race involving rather strange clothing!

Organisers are hoping to repeat the Olympics – the first in the group’s five-year history – and wish to thank Rickitt Educational Media of Langport for donating prizes and Chard RFC for the use of their sports field.
