LATIN is not a language spoken in every day life, but it does appear in the world of flowers.

Many popular plants have Latin names such as Leucanthemum vulgare which is Dog Daisy; Fragaria × ananassa which is strawberry or narcissus for daffodil.

One location at the Farmers’ Market in Taunton where Latin is a ‘no go zone’ is at the stall run by Kim Cooper.

Although she sells plants you will find no Latin names of the plants, just the name of the plant and a description of what it is, how to look after it and what it will look like when it grows.

But the only two words of Latin which might be acceptable is Carpe diem-seize the day or pluck the day.

Kim sells plants which she has grown, at least 95 per cent from seed, at the market every Thursday.

Isleback Plants which is based in Nimmer near Chard, has been growing for eight years and is in a healthy state of germination.

The seeds of success were sown many years ago, when Kim used to potter around with her grandfather who had a beautiful garden where he would grow flowers and sell cut flowers in the village.

And her dad, who was a keen gardener, enjoyed growing vegetables, a trait which he has passed to his daughter.

A decade before setting up her business, Kim who was born in the village of Whitwell in Hertfordshire, was the head gardener at a hotel on the Isle of Iona in the West of Scotland.

She was responsible for taking care of the plants and the ornamental features and for growing the vegetables used on the menu in the hotel.

Speaking about her love of plants, Kim said: “I have always been drawn to the outside and to plants.

“I love the idea of growing plants which are not fed with artificial fertilisers or using peat.

“I am very careful about how I grow my plants and I like to grow plants which are liked by bees.

“I got interested in plants when I worked in a health food shop which specialised with herbal remedies which used plants for medicinal purposes.

“And I am very much into organic food.

“When I started I used to borrow space from people to grow my plants.

“I used to use space in three gardens to get started as I did not have enough room myself.

“My parents were looking to move and wanted more space outside in the garden so I said why don’t we help each other as I needed more space to grow the plants.

“I love growing the plants like Trollius Golden Queen.

“I love growing hardy perennials and any plant which attracts bees and is a challenge to grow.

“I enjoy watching the plants germinate from this early stage and start to grow.

“It is amazing to see a small seed turn into a lovely big Foxglove plant.

“I would never grow anything I don’t love myself.

“I like looking for different plants and go through the seed catalogues to try and find something I like and I think my customers would like.

“I also look for inspiration where ever I go and recently on a walk I found found Alexander’s Great which loves shady areas.

“I have always been good about attention to detail and I enjoy looking after the plants as they grow and develop.

“It is nature v nurture and I like growing plants.

“I make sure all the plants are healthy and all my customers appreciate the difference I can make.

“I start sowing the seeds in January so they will be ready by June.

“Any plants I cannot grow from seed, I buy when they have just germinated and grow them from that point.”

Kim enjoys the hustle and bustle of the market in Taunton as she does with the other fairs she attends.

She enjoys talking to her customers who have grown to trust her and appreciate the effort she has put into growing her plants and making sure they can buy healthy plants.

Kim added: “I think the customers enjoy seeing the person who has grown the plants.

“They know I am passionate about plants and it is something I like to do.

“I can tell them all about the plants and flowers and where best they can go in the garden.

“I like it when people came back to buy more plants and tell me how the ones they have bought before are doing and if it was a tomato plant what the tomatoes tasted like.

“I have a good group of regular customers who have supported me since I have been doing this.

“I enjoy getting the positive feedback as it is only me growing all the plants and doing the work.”
