A ‘GENEROUS and caring’ woman has used her 100th birthday to raise more than £200 to sponsor a dog for the blind.

Gwen Hill, who was born in Dorset but has lived in Tatworth for most of her life, was inspired to raise money for charity after her own struggles with poor eyesight.

She celebrated her 100th birthday with fellow residents from Yew Tree Cottage Residential Home, family and friends on April 8.

Sarah Ambridge, who owns the care home, said: “Gwen has been a loyal friend to so many people, many of whom visit her at the Care Home regularly, especially Aloo Haggerty, who was her neighbour and dear friend.

“Gwen had 77 cards for her birthday not including the one from the Queen.

“Gwen’s struggles with poor eyesight in latter years led her to choose the charity, Guide Dogs For The Blind, for friends to donate to instead of giving presents and £200 was raised.

“Alfie, a Labrador/Retriver puppy has been sponsored as a result. This is testimony to Gwen’s generous and caring nature that has helped her reach her great age of 100.”

Gwen was born in Dorset and had two sister, one of which, Marjorie, is still alive and lives in Exeter.

She was married to Jim and has step-children and grandchildren.

Gwen worked as a primary school teacher at Musbury and Axminster primary schools until retirement aged 60.

She is an avid reader of the News and regularly completes the paper’s crossword puzzle.

Gwen was an active member of the church in Tatworth, the WI and many other local sewing, arts and craft groups.

She also took the take the opportunity to thank all her friends, family and staff at Yew Tree Cottage Residential Home for all their cards and donations, as there are far too many for her to write and thank.
