A PERSON has died and the M5 is closed in both directions following a fatal crash between Taunton and Wellington. Ten people were also injured.

Police have closed the road in both directions between J25 (Taunton) and J26 (Wellington). 

Emergency services and an air ambulance are at the scene. 

Police have confirmed a person has died at the scene.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police, said: "We were called to the M5 after reports of a crash between Taunton and Wellington. 

"It was a three car crash. 

"Sadly a person has died. 

"The road is likely to be closed for a large part of the day. 

"We would advise motorists to contact Highways England for travel information."

Six fire engines went to the scene at 6.30am and cut three passengers free from their vehicles. 

Two fire engines from Wellington, two from Taunton, one from Cullompton and a specialist unit from Middlemore in Exeter attended the incident. 

The fire service said five cars were involved in the crash. 

A spokesman for the fire service, said: "Crews used hydraulic rescue equipment to cut three passengers out of their vehicles. 

"Three fire engines have now left the scene."

A spokesman for Highways England has advised motorists to take diversion routes as the road remains closed. 

A spokesman, said: "The M5 is closed in both directions between J26 (Wellington) and J25 (Taunton) due to a serious incident. 

"All emergency services are on the scene. 

"Northbound traffic is advised to exit the M5 at J26 and follow the solid black triangle diversion symbol. 

"Take the A38 northbound and then rejoin the M5 at J25. 

"Southbound traffic is advised to follow the solid black square diversion symbol. 

"Take the A358 east through West Hatch. At Horton Cross take the A303 southbound through Newcott and then the A30 towards Honiton. 

"Rejoin the M5 at 29. 

"Road users are warned to expect delays and may wish to consider delaying their journey or use alternative routes."
