THE FAMILY of a Horton teenager who donated her organs after suddenly passing away say they have had an "incredible" year continuing work in her name.

The Jemima Layzell Trust was set up by parents Sophy and Harvey Layzell after their daughter, Jemima, 13, passed away in March 2012 after collapsing and dying of an aneurysm four days later.

Jemima's family have been raising awareness of organ donation after her body has been used to save eight lives.

Mrs Layzell said: "2017 is nearly over and this has been an incredible year for the trust.

"We have spread awareness for organ donation working with the NHS and national media to celebrate Jemima’s legacy as the donor with the highest number of recipients.

The trust raised £24,000 in 2017, including £14,000 that was raised from the second Flower Ball event, which was hosted by Taunton School, where Jemima was a pupil.

Among those in attendance were special guests and organ donor campaigners Lisa and Doug Johns, whose son Freddie received one half of Jemima’s liver.

Mrs Layzell added: "Thank you to our main sponsors Cooper Associates and Santander and all the individuals and businesses who contributed, you have been so generous.

"We have had new requests for help from Child Brain Injury Trust, Bristol Children’s Neuro-rehab ward and The Children’s Trust.

"Our annual donation to BIBIC will be made in the New Year and all new requests will also be reviewed."

Specialist equipment and technology has been donated to Bristol Children's Hospital to help those with brain injuries sit up, relieve pressure on their joints and help them to interact with others.

The trust is looking ahead to 2018, when the hard work will continue.

Mr and Mrs Layzell will be attending the Step Ahead Ball, organised by One Kind Act in January, which will raise money for brain injuries, with the trust being one of the beneficiaries.

Liam Harper, a pro golfer, has been appointed as the new ambassador for the trust.

"We are also excited to welcome our new ambassador for the trust," Mrs Layzell said.

"Liam and his wife came to open our first Christmas fair and we are looking forward to watching his progress in 2018 as he competes in Europe and spreads the work of the trust on his travels."
