A GERMAN journalist has rolled into Chard as the first stop on a Brexit Tour of Britain.

Erwin Klein has ridden his motorcycle from Braunschweig and is going between each of the towns twinned with those in his region.

This includes Chard with its twin town of Helmstedt, and Taunton which is twinned with Königslutter.

Mr Klein’s trip will see him ride as far east as Luton, and as far north as Dumfries in Scotland.

He said: “The British people have decided to leave the European Union. The consequences of this vote are still unknown and negotiations haven‘t even really started yet.

“Nearly all cities of the region in which I live in Germany have strong associations with British towns and cities.

“I am a German graphic designer, journalist, photographer and passionate biker. In order to understand this better I have decided to come over to Britain from May 12 until June 11, on my motorbike.

“I would like to visit all the twinned cities, I want to meet a lot of people, and I hope to receive as many impressions as possible.

“And of course this trip is also about tourism. I would like to show the attraction of your country to German people – and maybe you might also be interested to discover what‘s so fascinating about Braunschweig.

“So, let‘s go Brexit but don‘t forget: You‘ll never walk alone.”

To better understand Britain’s decision to leave the EU, Mr Klein met with MP at the time of the referendum, Marcus Fysh.

As well as being a local advocate of Brexit, Mr Fysh is also a member of the House of Commons Select Committee for International Trade and has been liaising with German ministers during the Brexit negotiation period so far.
